It wasn’t your usual yard sale…a cabinet maker was divesting of old tools and odd bits. It was the second day of the sale and I had stopped in on my way to somewhere else. I only had a few minutes to spare but within seconds I spotted this fabulous, rusty, cast iron thingy.
I picked it up. Dang it was heavy. [7 pounds!] I had no idea what it was but it had a hole at the top and it occurred to me that it would make a wonderful industrial, steampunk candlestick or doorstop.
The owner saw me holding it and said, “Ah, I see you’ve got the glass-making mold. Did you know it opens?” He opened it and said, “See. It’s for making aperitif glasses.” Cool.
I asked the price, he quoted one and well, it was way more than I wanted to pay (of course!). I offered 25% less and he agreed.
But as I carried it around I thought…am I crazy? Is anyone going to want this? Is anyone else going to see beauty in this? Honestly, I don’t know, but I decided to trust my gut and bought it. Hope to have it in my store this week…time will tell if it sells!!
Okay, ‘fess up…what’s the weirdest thing you’ve bought for yourself or to resell??
